May’s Lawn and Landscape Tips:
Landscaping
- Remove all leaves and debris from landscaped beds
- Do any necessary pruning of trees and shrubs; particularly any damage that may have resulted from winter storms
- Cut back & divide perennials and ornamental grasses
- Plant any new trees, shrubs, and perennials. It's best to devise a plan or consult a design professional for any elaborate additions to your landscape
- Plant annual flowers
- Apply a bed pre-emergent to fertilize plants, promote healthy growth and discourage weed germination
- Put down fresh mulch if you haven't already to aid in water retention and weed prevention
Lawn Care
- Verti-cut, seed, and fertilize shady or thinning areas in lawn
- Whether it was this spring or last fall…water any recently seeded areas
- Fertilize grass with a balanced product for continued green-up and root-development
- Remove all leaves and debris from lawn
- Spray broadleaf weeds (dandelions, chickweed, henbit etc.) as they appear
- Monitor your irrigation; over-watering will result in high water requirements during the hot summer months
Miscellaneous Outdoor Information
- Sharpen and/or repair outdoor equipment (i.e. weed-eaters, pruning shears, shovels, mower blades, etc.)
- Repot and fertilize houseplants; do not move any plants outside until overnight temperatures remain consistently above 60 degrees
- Clean and possibly seal "hardscape" areas (i.e. paver patios, walkways, driveways, etc). This will remove residue or damage from salts & ice-melt and protect these surfaces from everyday wear & tear, stains and harsh weather conditions. Using a sealant can also dramatically enhance the color and finish of a paved surface. It's best to consult a professional before working with chemicals.
